Feature-based delivery ships one complete user-facing feature at a time. It's visible, easy for stakeholders to understand, and well-suited to incremental improvements on a stable architecture. If the foundation is solid and the requirements are clear, this is usually the right default.
Layer-Based Development
Layer-based delivery builds one layer at a time — UI first, then API, then backend. It can suit highly specialized teams or necessary platform groundwork, but it carries real risk: no end-to-end value until late, integration surprises at the seams, and no way to validate with users until the whole stack is connected. For significant initiatives, look at how similar products approach the problem, understand patterns your users already recognize from other tools, and consider market dynamics, SWOT considerations, and build-vs-buy tradeoffs where they're genuinely relevant. You don't need a 40-slide deck for every feature, but you should know what informed your decisions.
Knowledge Capture
Document decisions and their rationale, trade-offs made, constraints and dependencies, personas, use cases, and validated assumptions. If something affected a decision, it belongs in your knowledge base. This isn't bureaucracy — it's how you avoid re-litigating the same conversations six months from now.

Sprint length of one to three weeks, with two weeks being the most common. Keep it consistent — changing sprint length mid-quarter creates more confusion than it solves.

Read the materials and understand the problem — not just the proposed solution. Leadership often presents the solution they're imagining, not the problem they're actually trying to solve. Get to the underlying need first.
Clarify Scope & Success Metrics
Ask: who is this for, what problem does it solve, what behavior should change as a result, and how will you measure success? These four questions alone will surface 80% of the ambiguity that otherwise shows up during engineering.
Draft an Epic Brief
Include background and context, objectives and KPIs, scope and explicitly out-of-scope items, dependencies and constraints, risks and assumptions, and rough timelines or sequencing. Keep it to one page where possible.
Decompose
Break the epic into capabilities or features, user journeys, and individual user stories. Prefer vertical slices — stories that deliver value end-to-end — over horizontal slices that produce incomplete functionality no user can actually interact with.
Plan Spikes Where Needed
If UX options or technical feasibility are unclear, create spikes to explore them before committing to scope. A one-day spike that saves a two-week wrong turn is always worth it.
Estimate & Prioritize
Estimate effort with engineering and design. Use a prioritization framework — WSJF, RICE, or MoSCoW — to make scope decisions visible and defensible. Write down why something was prioritized. Future disagreements will be easier to resolve.
Align and Communicate
Share the epic brief, proposed scope and MVP, and key risks and trade-offs with relevant stakeholders before work starts. Surprises mid-sprint are avoidable. Most of them come from alignment gaps that existed before sprint planning.
Execute and Validate
Ship in increments. Track metrics. Use what you learn to refine — not just to confirm what you already believed. The feedback loop is only valuable if you're willing to act on it.

Run any story through INVEST before it goes into a sprint. A good story is Independent, Negotiable, Valuable, Estimable, Small, and Testable. If it fails any of these checks, refine it or split it before it enters development.

You will always have more ideas than capacity. That's not a failure of planning — it's the nature of product work. Your value is in making good choices, not in accommodating every request.

Simple, fast, and widely understood. Best for scoping a release or epic when stakeholders need to participate in the trade-off conversation.

Distinguishes must-have basics from performance enhancers and unexpected delighters. Useful when trying to understand user satisfaction drivers.
In practice, you combine frameworks with data — usage, conversion, revenue, churn, support cost — and qualitative feedback from user interviews, support tickets, and sales calls. No framework replaces judgment, but good frameworks make your judgment visible and defensible.
Feedback: How to Keep a Healthy Loop
Shipping without a feedback loop is building in a vacuum. You'll produce output, but you won't know if it's moving outcomes — and you won't learn fast enough to course-correct.
